축제와 파티의 나라 필리핀, 절대 다수가 빈곤인 나라가 웬 축제와 파티가 그리도 많은지......이것도 문화의 차이가 아닐까 생각하기도 하지만 엇듯 이해가 안갑니다. ㅡ.ㅡ;;

Even in the middle of my familys grief, I couldnt forget Bicolandias upcoming festival. The Ibalong festival will be celebrated from 25-31 October 2005 in Legazpi City, Albay. It is a week-long festivity depicting Bicols early beginning as portrayed by the characters in the epic IBALONG.
It is important to note though that Legazpi Citys Patron Saint is St. Raphael the Archangel, healer of the sick and companion of the traveler ( parabulong kan mga naghehelang asin kaibahan kan mga naglalakaw ) whose feast is observed on the 24th of October.
Incidentally, the Patron Saint in the small village where I came from (Payawin, Gubat, Sorsogon) is the same St. Raphael of whom my ancestors (up to my generation) are devotees. We fondly call him Señor San Raphael.
Since my great grandmother (up to now), my family has consistently lighted candles and prayed novena (both in bicol and latin) in that small church every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday; especially for the sick (not only physically) and the traveling (my big family alone has too many travelers). Though I never got to learn (not even memorize) how to pray the rosary, as a young child, I remember mumbling ora pro nobis and Gloria Patri beside my great grandma when doing our novenas for Señor San Raphael.
My great grandma swore that ours is the original St. Raphael statue that the Spaniards brought. The one in Legazpi is just a replica of some sort. (I will not forget to take a photo next time that Im home.)

The Ibalong Festival was revived this year following its’ shelving the past two years due to the devastation wrought by successive super typhoons that hit Legazpi City and the Bicol region. The festival proper will be from October 25-31 according to Mr. Alan O. Ranola, this year’s Festival Chairman of the Execom but he added that there will be other side activities from October 1-24 that will feature entertainment shows, educational, cultural, sports and religious activities and the Legazpi Port Fiesta. The festivities took off with a motorcade along the city streets last October 1, 2008.
Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal in his statement during the soft-opening thanked all the stakeholders especially the private and business sector who shouldered most of the expenses of the different activities of the festival. “A concerted effort will make Ibalong Festival a resounding success,” he concluded.
